Egypt's Climate Zones and Seasonal Logic
Egypt sits almost entirely within the Saharan climate zone, which means its weather is characterised by extreme heat in summer, mild winters, minimal rainfall, and the significant cooling effect of altitude and proximity to the Mediterranean in Alexandria. The Nile Valley sites — Cairo, Luxor, Aswan — experience their most extreme temperatures between May and September, while Alexandria and Sinai operate on a partially Mediterranean and partially desert pattern respectively.
The High Season (October–February)
October through February is when the overwhelming majority of heritage tourists visit Egypt. Daytime temperatures in Luxor and Aswan range from 24°C–28°C, dropping to 10°C–14°C at night in January and February. Cairo is cooler, occasionally cold at night in January. The Giza Plateau and Valley of the Kings are busiest in December and the first week of January, coinciding with European and North American winter breaks. February is generally excellent — temperatures are comfortable, holiday crowds have passed, and spring light is good for photography.
The period around Christmas and New Year sees peak visitor numbers at all major sites. If you are visiting during these weeks, arrive at site opening times to secure the first hour before tour groups arrive. Book accommodation 3–4 months in advance for Luxor and Aswan in December.
The Shoulder and Low Season (March–September)
March is a transition month — still comfortable, increasingly warm toward the end, and significantly quieter than February. The Khamsin (dust-laden spring wind) can affect visibility and air quality in March and April. April through May is warm to hot but visits before 09:00 and after 16:00 are comfortable. June through September at Luxor and Aswan involves 40°C+ midday temperatures that make sustained outdoor activity genuinely hazardous without significant precautions. The sites are far emptier in this period, which creates photographic opportunities unavailable in high season — but the heat management demands are severe.
Ramadan — the dates change annually by approximately 10 days each year — affects operating hours at some sites and the availability of food and drink services during daylight hours. Our guides are updated before each Ramadan period with specific operational changes at major sites.
What Each Month Offers

| February | 12–24°C | Moderate | Abu Simbel Solar Alignment (22nd); excellent value and conditions |
| March | 16–29°C | Low–Moderate | Khamsin dust winds possible; excellent otherwise |
| April | 20–35°C | Low | Warming quickly; morning visits essential; sites noticeably quieter |
| May | 24–40°C | Low | Only for early-risers; 05:00–09:00 window comfortable; midday hazardous |
| June | 27–43°C | Very Low | Extreme heat; indoor museums only midday; exceptional emptiness |
| July | 28–44°C | Very Low | Hottest month; viable only with strict heat protocol |
| August | 27–43°C | Very Low | As July; Cairo slightly cooler than Upper Egypt |

Special Events Worth Planning Around
Abu Simbel Solar Alignment — 22 February
Twice a year (22 October and 22 February) the rising sun illuminates the innermost sanctuary of Ramesses II's great temple at Abu Simbel, aligning with three of the four seated deities. These events draw 4,000–6,000 visitors each. Transport from Aswan and local accommodation must be booked 6–8 weeks in advance. The alignment itself lasts approximately 20 minutes; arrive by 05:30 to secure a position. The same event occurs on 22 October. See our Aswan guide for logistics.
Luxor Festival Season — October/November
The Luxor International Film Festival and the Luxor African Film Festival both take place in October. The city also hosts the Opet Festival recreation — a procession from Karnak to Luxor Temple following the ancient processional route — in late October or early November, with the exact date set by the organising committee each year. These events add cultural programming and international visitors to what is already a busy month. Check our guides for confirmed 2026 dates closer to the season.
Winter Solstice at Abu Simbel — 21 December
The winter solstice sunrise also produces a partial solar alignment at Abu Simbel, illuminating the sanctuary entrance without reaching the rear statues. Less dramatic than the February event but much less attended. The archaeology community and photographers who value quieter conditions often prefer this date. Logistically simpler and no advance booking required for normal transport.
Ramadan Operating Hours
During Ramadan, some site facilities — cafes, visitor centre services, guided tour availability — operate on adjusted schedules. Sites themselves generally maintain normal hours, but staff capacity may be reduced. Evening visits to Karnak and Luxor Temple become particularly atmospheric during Ramadan, with local visitors present in larger numbers after Iftar. The pre-dawn period before Fajr prayer (shortly before sunrise) is an extraordinary time to be at major open sites in Egypt during this month.
